Must post on this historical day. The title says it all.
Soon I'll have to report on my 5k Trifecta for this year. I love 5ks.
Next year hopefully I'll be saying that I love 10ks.
And the year after that half marathons?
And the year after that....... Jeremy thinks someday I'll want to do a marathon and then someday dive into ultras like him. But right now all my mind can conceive for myself is a half. So, we'll see. :) But I know that if I make it that far, I would probably be tempted to see what I could do beyond that.
The past two nights Blake has had a lot of trouble sleeping. Thus, I did not get much sleep. Poor guy woke up with a fever Monday night (although technically it was already Tuesday morning since it was 1am something) and he wouldn't go back to his crib at all. So I tried sleeping with him in my bed and on the recliner. Didn't get too much sleep that night. Last night he woke up before I went to bed and I figured out he preferred the couch over anything: his back to the back couch cushion, his front to me so he could snuggle with my hair. Have I mentioned he likes snuggling with my hair like Ada does? Well, now you know. Two hair snugglers. Sometimes I want to cut all my hair off. Not really, but sometimes I go a little crazy with my hair getting touched/tugged/rubbed sometimes.
My brother Elijah did the hair snuggling thing, till like 7 or 8 years of age. Yikes. Thinking I might have to start wearing two braids so each kid can have a side.
Other kids I know that do the hair snuggling thing: my German friend Rahel's son, one of Ashley's boys (#2 I think?), and I feel like I'm missing someone here... Anyways, it is kind of a rarer thing, but it's out there. Ada likes to "sample" other people's hair, it's been funny to watch when she's sitting with one of my friends. Slyly sneaking her hand over to some hair strands. Hair snuggling stealth. Guys may do the yawn and arm over shoulder thing, my girl just wants you for your hair while she sucks her thumb.
Have you heard about the trip back to Kansas where Ada was desperately calling out for my hair? "Mama, I want your hair!!!!" I don't even remember how many times that was called out. Jeremy does a good impression though.
Oh, back to Blake and the past two nights. He's got some crazy teething going on! His fever finally went away today when the first tooth of this series popped through the gum. And interestingly enough, it wasn't one of the top central two, it was one to his right side. Although the top two are just about there. Hoping tonight he'll sleep well. (And so I can get a full night's rest, too.)
This morning I was really touched by an act of kindness. And also slapped in the face with the realization of my stupidity.
This morning it was raining. Pretty well. As in, not a light sprinkle. Having two not very good nights in a row, I was dragging to get everyone ready and out the door to walk Hayley to school. I had Blake on my back, and I decided to carry Seth in my arms while holding the umbrella*. As we were running a bit late, we were trying to hustle, which meant a slow jog for me as I was trying to get a feel for a good position with my hands for holding Seth & the umbrella. A block from our house a van pulled over and a mom (with kids and obviously driving to the school) asked if we wanted a ride. She only had one seat in the back available, and I asked Hayley if she wanted to go with her, and she immediately said no. (This was my stupid part. Of all the talks about not going with strangers, and here --blaming this on my sleep deprivation-- I was asking her if she wanted to ride with one.) After realizing my blunder, and with Hayley's resolute "no", I thanked the lady and politely declined and we continued on.
Next thing I knew, her older daughter was running after us with an umbrella for the girls to use, which I thought was so sweet!
And now my dilemma is trying to figure out how to find this lady and give her umbrella back!
*umbrella: So, would this be an example of God providing? I've never really been an umbrella user before. I've always done the raincoat thing and been just fine. Somehow we got through walking to and from school last year just fine. This year Jeremy received an umbrella from his employer right before we got some heavier rain. Heavier than it rained last year. So the umbrella has actually been very handy to have around lately! And it's nice and big, so it can somewhat cover kids if they're walking right beside me. And actually one day I used two carriers and had Seth & Blake on me (which I've always wanted to try!) and that worked out well, although my hips were feeling pretty sore after that one.
Anyways, if you have any ideas about how I can return this lady's umbrella that would be great. Obviously she might drive past again, but I'm facing the other way so it's not like I'd be able to see her and wave her down. I'm hoping to see her in her van around the school sometime and I could give her my address; the other thing is I'm not sure I could recognize her, as it was a quick exchange. Although I kinda think I could, but I don't know until I see her, but if I don't recognize her I won't know if I could or not. Circles! At least I know what color her van is.
Here's the pic Ada took the day of the double carrying. 11/30/12. It was conference week, that's why we were leaving so early.
Conferences are a lot different here. So basically there is a designated "conference week" and around two weeks before that each teacher tapes up a time slot schedule for the conference week (each being 20 min. long), and each parent signs up for a spot sometime during that week. All the kids get out at 11:20am each day during conference week, and then conferences begin at 12:30pm and go into the afternoon. And typically they'll have one day of that week with a Spanish translator (if the teacher doesn't speak Spanish).
So back home [Salina, Kansas] conferences were after school in the evening as far as I can remember.
And for your viewing pleasure, some pictures from Saturday afternoon:
Update on Seth: He got his stitches out on Friday. At first I thought that was pretty early, only being four days, and the Dr. who stitched him up said stitches out at 5 to 7 days. But after doing some online research, I came to find out that 3 to 5 days is normal for head/face wounds, as they heal rather quickly. He did awesome when I took him to get his stitches out! The Dr. was really impressed, said he was the best patient of the day and she wished her adult patients could see him. He laid perfectly still; I held his head just in case, but he did great. He was talking to the Dr. & I. I asked him if it felt funny when she was pulling the stitches out, and he said ya. :)
Pretty much the day after the accident, or maybe even day of just later in the day, I felt slightly silly for calling 911. But I suppose I would rather err on the side of being more precautious than the flip side. After some reflection on why I had called 911 this time rather than the two previous finger injuries that have required stitches (and bled a lot more!), I realized it was the head factor. Oh well, live and learn.
Oh, and so what I think he gashed his head open on was a picture frame. Ever since I painted the kids' room & living & dining room, I've had some of the frames stacked in our room. One was sort of on its side, with the corner sticking out, so I think that's what Seth hit his head on. There wasn't any blood on that corner, but there was blood on the side of it. Which I can't figure out, but maybe Seth touched his head and then his finger touched the side of the frame while he getting up, I really don't know. That's my best guess, though. I can just picture Ada chasing him into the room, he either tripped over a toy or she helped him forward, and his head went into that. I don't like them playing in my room anyway, and actually when they had run off with the stream of plastic pockets (which I like them popping in my sight, not playing with elsewhere, so I can throw them away when they're done) and then I heard them in my room something dinged in my head about telling them to get out, but then the crying, and that was that.
Today at the grocery store the kids got free Kellogg's bowls. Every once in awhile they'll hand out stuff that they want to get rid of. Before they have gotten bouncy balls. The kids were excited! And actually at our previous stop before that we were each given a free sample (of chocolate!) which was met with enthusiasm. Sometimes I feel kinda bad, and I'm not sure why, when I'm in a free sample environment with all the kids. Most of the time the people handing out stuff are very friendly and want to give out samples to all the kids, but I guess I feel like I don't want to hog all the samples, if that makes any sense.
Awhile ago I started letting Seth walk to and from school when we go to pick Hayley up. I've learned he can successfully complete one leg of the journey without complaint, but not both. So sometimes I'll have him ride there and then walk back, or occasionally walk both ways, but then it's painful to get him home on those last few blocks. And sometimes he just rides in the stroller both ways. And some mornings lately he & Ada have stayed home with Jeremy since he's taking this month off of running, and also has had a lack of early morning meetings. Which has been a huge help when it's raining hard in the morning.
Blake has been getting up on his hands and knees (and sometimes feet) lately! He wants to move; he'll be up on all fours doing the rocking thing, getting a feel for this new position. It's so fun to watch them learn at this age! Sitting to crawling to pulling up to taking steps. On Sunday we had nursery duty, and there was an older baby who was could crawl. Seth caught on that he couldn't as easily keep stuff away from him as he could with Blake. I told him Blake was going to be crawling soon like that kid!
When Seth turned 2 that made him old enough to go to Sunday School & Crosswalk. We made it to SS a few Sundays after that, but lately have just been going to the last two meetings. The last couple of Sundays he's been really tired for Crosswalk and has ended up coming to the nursery. It's a hard schedule for the guy on Sundays with afternoon church. I've been telling Ada that after she turns 4 she'll have to sit with us in BOB. She sat with Jeremy and Hayley one Sunday a few weeks back, and pre-Blake she tried a couple of times. She's a very antsy person and sitting still is not really her thing, unless she's watching a show. So we'll see how it goes.
A couple of weeks ago Ada asked when she could race me. :)
Today while working in the kids' room, I told Ada the story of how when I was in high school and my two youngest brothers were around her age, they went into my room and messed with my stuff and took pictures of themselves doing that. She got a big kick out of that!

Well, that was long!
Why is Jeremy taking a month off from running? Is that an annual thing? The weather? Injury?
If it's raining when I wake up, I think of you and wonder if you're walking everyone to school in that, or if you ever drive.
Hair cuddling! So funny! Love all the group shots too, captures the craziness of the 4 of them to look back on :)
That's cute, the hair cuddling.
How sweet of that lady to give you that umbrella.
Even I have been the recipient of red headed hair snuggling!
